Arthur K. Shaffer oversees the firm’s intellectual property (IP) practice area. For more than 20 years, he has worked with clients on patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, trade dress, licensing agreements and other intangible assets. He also works with computer law issues including Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) and Digital Millennial Copyright Act (DMCA) and litigation of these issues. Specifically, he works to obtain, protect and litigate intellectual property rights in connection with computer and software systems; mechanical devices and medical systems; and other innovative technologies within the public and private sectors. His clients range from Fortune 500 companies to entrepreneurial and small business ventures.
As a patent attorney and founder of Intellectual Property Center, Mr. Shaffer frequently speaks to local and national audiences in the areas of intellectual property law and the internet, providing guidance on its evolving legal landscape. Throughout his legal career, Mr. Shaffer has garnered significant experience in complex business transactions and litigation involving a variety of intellectual property concerns.
A former physicist and controls engineer, Mr. Shaffer worked in cutting-edge technologies, utilizing computers and electrical systems in the largest and most challenging projects around the world. As a controls engineer, he worked on the control systems for the new Hong Kong airport.
In his current, role, Mr. Shaffer works with both major corporations as well as individual entrepreneurs to protect their intellectual property rights. As an entrepreneur himself, Mr. Shaffer understands first-hand the many challenges faced by business owners. Partnering with his clients, he provides them with the resources they need to protect and grow their intellectual property.

Mr. Shaffer works with a number of charitable organizations, including the Boy Scouts of America, where he serves as a Commissioner and as a mentor to young scouts.
In addition, Mr. Shaffer serves on the Leawood Lions Club board, a group dedicated to serving others. During his tenure as president, he established a new Diversity & Inclusion board position to address the broad societal influences surrounding our community such as race, culture, religion, age, gender and personal circumstance.
Believing strongly in the power of entrepreneurs and local business, Mr. Shaffer also devotes time to various clubs devoted to entrepreneurs and local business leaders, including the Kansas City Breakfast Club.
